You guessed it, I’m pessimistic about optimism, or should I say concerned that optimism has left the building, much like Elvis.
When did you last hear any of the presidential candidates truly espouse optimism or for that matter any political figure, let alone the “media”? I know, you will point at Mr. Romney and say he made reference to it here and there, but as Barry Goldwater said “Wake up Conservatives”! We have no candidates on either side of the political fence that truly believes our best times are ahead of us. Even my close friends, think America is on the decline. Well, let’s just stop it! America’s best days are yet to come and as Americans we had better start thinking that way, or it will never happen.
Our politicians simply reflect the cynicism that we pour out to them. The world is heating up and we are all going to drown under a tidal wave of melting glacial ice, the worst war in history is upon us, the budget deficit will implode the Federal Government, the Chinese are taking over, all our jobs are going oversees, this is what we here day after day, but there is one small problem, its not true. Of course we need be alert to the ever changing economic and political landscape and take steps accordingly, but without a positive outlook, how can we possibly overcome those truly massive and legitimate hurdles that we must jump.
I don’t know about you, but I for one, am voting in ‘08’ for someone that has a positive outlook for America and its people.

Good one Terry! I actually agree with you!
Very bold Terry, and I agree except that you forgot to add in all the illegal's living here that we are all paying for in one way or another. The criminals in jail eating food and using a toilet are one good example and the misuse of the health care, schools, social security, etc... that we have all worked hard for all our working lives. Americans need to get tougher and work even harder for themselves so we don't have to rely on anyone else.
I say never give up and keep going forward or you will end up in a hole that you can't get out of.

Terry, I agree with your major premise, but I disagree with your contention that none of the presidential candidates express optimism.
The Republican candidates for the most part are true optimists in that they believe we can win the global war on terror. Especially Fred Thompson, Rudy Guliani, Mitt Romney, Duncan Hunter and even John McCain. They believe in that our military and the American people can overcome our challenges, no matter how dire the circumstances.
Democrats, on the other hand, belong to the party of doom and gloom. They win if the country loses. What a sad commentary on what was once a great national party. That's why you have Dingy Harry standing on the floor of the Senate decaring that the war is lost.
You'll agree that we need an optimism based on the reality that recognizes the dire circumstances we find ourselves facing, but has faith in the ability of the American people to do what's necessary to overcome.
As for the contention that no Republican candidates believe "our best days are ahead," we haven't had much of chnnce to hear from them except in media controlled soundbtes and 1 minute statements during debates. As we get further in the campaign, I think you'll be surprized by their optimism and forward thinking ideas. That certainly isn't true on the other side of the political spectrum.
Always good to be optimistic too bad it's not contagious!
